Interview With Amanda McKinney

Can you tell us a little about your books?
I write sexy murder mysteries, full of suspense,
romance and a few steamy love scenes. Being the proud Southern girl that I am,
each book is set in the south and reflects small-town culture at its finest.

What book is your newest release?
My newest release, The Storm—book #3 in the
Berry Springs Series—comes out December 5th. I’m super excited about
this book; it’s a whodunnit murder mystery at its core, featuring the swoon-worthy
detective Dean Walker, and smart, independent Psychologist Heidi Novak, and a
motley crew of suspects. The story begins with Dean finding a man in the middle
of a dark, icy road, shot between the eyes. That man is Heidi Novak’s husband.
Five minutes after meeting Heidi (and being unexpectedly attracted to her) Dean
saves her life from a hailstorm of bullets, and it becomes apparent she’s next
on the killer’s list. As Dean dives into the case, he begins to believe that
the death of Heidi’s husband is connected to his father’s unsolved murder years
earlier – but how? What’s the connection? And so begins a sexy murder mystery about
haunted pasts, revenge, and finding unexpected love in the darkest of places.

How did you choose the genre you write in?
That was easy—I write what I love to read. I’m
a sucker for romance, suspense, and alpha males. Who doesn’t love a strong,
sexy, take-control alpha male?!
4.
When did you know you wanted to write a book?
I’ve always had a nerdy, super creative
side of me, and I’ve always loved to read. But it wasn’t until I walked away
from my career to become a stay-at-home mom that I decided to write a book… and
I did, and never looked back.
5.
Do you work with an outline, or just write?
Oh God, I’ve very hardcore about my
outline! If I don’t write a solid, detailed outline, the story quickly derails
and goes all over the place, taking on about ten different plot lines. And then
I have a panic attack and drown myself in vodka before setting the manuscript
on fire. Just joking… about the fire part, I write on a computer. ;)

What is a usual day like for you, and how is it
structured?
I’m someone who loves plans, routines and
structure. Spontaneity scares the shit out of me. I’m also an early riser, so
my alarm clock goes off at 4:30am every day so I can get in some coffee time
and a workout, before the kiddos wake. I then work my ass off to meet my daily
writing goal, while juggling my two boys, cleaning, errands, house chores and
cooking. It’s full days, but I love it. I’m at my best when I have a lot on my
plate.

What writing projects are you currently working
on?
I’m very excited about my current project!
I’ve begun a new series—the Black Rose Mystery Series—about a small, creepy
town called Devil’s Den where 3 single, rich, uber smart and super badass
sisters run one of the top private investigation companies in the country,
Black Rose Investigations. It’s got murder, mystery, romance, steamy love
scenes, small town folklore and sexy alpha males. The series will be made up of
novellas, which are about half the length of a normal book, so they’ll be
quick, fun reads to help us busy women escape for a bit!

For a reader who hasn’t read one if your books
yet, which book do you suggest they start with?
Well, that’s the cool thing about the Berry
Springs Series—you don’t have to read the books in order to understand what’s
going on. Each book is a different story with new characters. The scene stays
the same, as well as a handful of crossover characters. So, just start with
whatever one tickles your fancy!
